50's Style makeup tutorial

Don't you just love that 50's style? The clothes, hair and makeup seem to inspire a lot of people in their every day style nowadays. Recently I did a 50's style photo shoot with friend photographer George Dimitrov (www.georgedimitrovphotography.com). I created a makeup look for it, and below you will see step by step how I've done the makeup.

Strong brows

In the 50's the shape of the brow was square and strong, getting the brows right and you're half way there! To create a good brow there are a few tricks to get it right: Hold you brush or pencil to the side of the nose so you can see wher your brow should start, for a 50's brow; it should be square. The arch is sharp; with the same pencil you can find the placement of your arch. Hold the pencil next to the outer side of your iris; this is the highest point of your brow. Now the tail should end in a nice point. Hold the pencil from the tip of your nose to the outer corner of your eye; this is where the tail ends

Eye lid and crease area

De colors of the eye shadows they used in the 50's were very neutral and basic, the focus was on the lips and the winged eye liner. On the eyelid I used a vrey light peach color 'Grain' by MAC, and in the crease I used 'soft brown' by MAC to warm up the crease area. Under the browbone add a soft highlighter to give the brows extra lift; I used 'Shroom' by MAC.

Kohl pencil and dark eye shadow

To give the eye a more sensual look I made it darker by using a dark grey kohl pencil. Start with a thin line on the inside of the eye, and make it thicker on the outside. With a pencil brush fade out the kohl pencil, and set this with a dark grey eye shadow. I used 'Black Swan' by MAC for the kohl pencil, and 'Typhographic' by MAC for the dark grey eye shadow

Silver grey eye shadow and black eye liner

In the crease area I added a silver eye shadow to make the look more glamorous; I used 'Electra' by MAC. Make sure you blend the colors well to get a nice transition from the dark grey to the silver and the soft brown. Next comes the eye liner. Make sure you have enough product on your brush to make it glide smoother. Deside where you want your liner to end, and start from there.

Or start from the middle and flick up your brush at the end. Another trick is to use a piece of tape to get a crisp line.

Add a lot of mascara, or some nice false eye lashes, and the eyes are done

The lips

For the lips we're going for red naturally. In the 50's they loved the full red lips so they lined the lips slightly outside the natural lipline, with rounded cupid's bows. We want the lips to last, so a good way is to fill in your lips with the pencil too, even when your lipstick will be gone, they will still be red, you only need a touch up.

Rest of the face

In the 50's the base was natural with not a lot of contouring or high lighting. The blush was usually a red toned blush, but of course you can chose whatever you like here, the main focus is on the lips and the winged eye liner.
